A car accident reconstructionist can identify factors involved in the crash that can identify the cause and determine who is at fault. 

A car accident reconstructionist will analyze photographs, video footage, measurements, and statements taken at the scene by police to investigate the physical and mechanical evidence of the crash. This includes the damage to the cars, length of skid marks on the pavement, pavement scars, direction the cars were traveling, angles of impact, the relationship of the accident located to intersections, and the final resting place of the vehicles. 

Once this information has been gathered, reconstructionists will use scientific models and computer animation to calculate the speed and movements of each vehicle prior to the accident. The effect of the impact on each vehicle, whether the drivers had control, if poor visibility was a factor, and whether drivers could have avoided the collision are all taken into consideration. They will then analyze the injuries sustained and conclude whether any driving errors caused the accident.

The findings will enable the reconstructionist to determine whose version of an auto accident is consistent with the physical evidence and can show what actually happened. Their testimony can help demonstrate liability for personal injuries and wrongful deaths in car accidents.
